We really have always dreamed of a newer open space in our kitchen and dining room. And on a whim, we decided with only a couple of months until baby boys delivery, we should gut our house and redo the dining room, kitchen, flooring, etc. We started this project in the middle of January. And it was a long winter of major transition. The baby didn’t have a nursery and we filled the school room with all of our decorations, etc. We only wanted the minimum Downstairs among the dust. And I mean, white powdery dust everywhere for months! And did I mention it was cold outside and I was hugely pregnant f?
To prevent our house from collapsing, two temporary walls were built so that they could take out the wall and replace it with a beam. I left for this. I was way too nervous
To come home and see this wall gone was so exciting. Do you see the dust, though?
I really tried to keep it as clean as I could, but it really was a pointless task.
They put can lights in and it automatically changed the look of the kitchen!
Like good friends do, they melted wall paper off the walls, while I sat and watched.
Time for the cabinets to come down!!
The sound it made coming off of the walls was scary!
This is when things got real. This is when I felt the most challenged. No floors and no cabinets.
Dennis worked on this for days, getting the tile up!
You know what’s hard? A concrete floor.
We designed our kitchen and cabinets on a computer at IKEA. It was a wonderful experience, and felt like I was making major major decisions. All went smooth. But I did get feisty over a lazy Susan I wanted nothing to do with. It’s fine now, I use it as a liquor cabinet.
On the way down, Bob suggested we gut the closet and put the fridge there. That was a major leap of faith, but I’m so happy with that decision. We’re now in the late part of Feb. 6 weeks to baby!
Here is the insides of the fridge, and I decided I’d like to add shelving on the far right.
At this point in my pregnancy, it felt like the dumbest thing we’ve ever done. And, it’s still frigid outside.
The flooring and cabinets are in these boxes waiting to be put together.
And so, the beginning of the kitchen are coming together piece by piece, evening by evening.
Every decision we made felt like rolling the dice, closing our eyes and just hoping for a miracle!
Despite how it looks, it’s still cold. But at least it doesn’t look like the dead of winter anyMore.
This used to be the play room, but because our fourth bedroom needs to be a nursery, we painted, and moved the school room downstairs!
Time for flooring to go down!!!
Sara was 18-ish months here. So little.
Time to paint the living room!
Once we felt pretty sure the destruction was over, I was chomping at the bit to decorate again!!!!
Things were finally start to come into place...
And then..... just like that..... it was getting close to time for baby!
